What do we see when we look in the mirror?

Photos

  • Russell Simmon’s reflection

“I think I look pretty good for a 54 year old. I can tell when I’m not eating right by my skin complexion.”

  • Daniel DiCriscio’s reflection

“When I look in the mirror I see Jesus, religion, warmth, passion, sexuality. I see boy, I see girl. There’s a spirituality I see within my skin tone, it’s almost like back to the days when Jesus was up on the cross.”

“My lips are my favorite facial feature because they make me want to kiss myself. In third grade I actually won the “Most Handsome” category, it was actually the “Most Beautiful” category and they crossed it out and put “Handsome”.”

“Don’t hate me ’cause I’m beautiful.”

  • Tim DAX’s reflection

“When I look into my eyes I can see who I really am. It’s not much different than I look outside, just softer. I see a fighter, I also see someone insecure who’s learning how to deal with that. People make the mistake of thinking I’m hiding from the world with my tattoo but I’m actually announcing that I’m here. It reminds me that I’m a hardcore motherfucker. People see it that way and others see it as frightening.”

  • David Alfredo Lopez
  • “I see a person who’s made a lot of mistakes. My face is like a work of art in the sense that when someone looks at my face they’re going to feel an emotion whether they’re repulsed by it or they’re interested and fascinated by it. When you look at my face it’s strange, a little different, so people look twice and notice the scars. Like good art should do, it evokes emotion. I’ve been through a lot and you can see that in my face.”

  • Dana DeArmond’s reflection

“I see I’m a motherly person and I like taking care of people. I’m naturally blessed with these eyebrows and my cheekbones. Every now and then I’ll get a filler in my smile lines because there are a lot of photographers I have to work with that don’t really flatter me. I consider myself to be a classically beautiful woman and these photographers don’t know what they’re doing. I’m not complaining about being pretty but it’s not always easy. I kind of have a chronic bitch face. I had a drunk girl tell me one time “No offense but you look like Hilary Swank.”!”

  • Luenelle’s reflection

“I see myself but I see myself as a little girl. My eyes are happy like they were when I was little. I think I have a cute mouth. And I’m a little rounder than I used to be but I think I’d be a different person if I lost weight. I think my mouth is sexy and I make my money with it.” (laughs)

  • Ginina Pulcinella’s reflection

“It’s almost as if I slept on the left side of my face for a really long time so it got flatter, which I like. People tell me the right side of my face looks like Madonna, which I don’t really like because I know that men don’t find her attractive.”

  • Monica Delgado’s reflection

When I shot this mirror portrait of Monica in October 2011 her newborn daughter was about a month old. When she looked in the mirror she said she saw a very lucky person with a lot of hope and a tear began to fall from her eye. Unfortunately her mental state declined in the coming months and she attempted suicide but was unsuccessful. She just recently completed a 16 week program and sees a new light in her life.
